Cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks) are fully active only when phosphorylated by a Cdk-activating kinase (CAK) [1]. Metazoan CAK is itself a Cdk, Cdk7, whereas the CAK of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a distinct enzyme unrelated to Cdks [1].
