<h4>Background</h4> Calcineurin in a pleiotropic signaling enzyme that promotes pathological cardiac remodeling but also cardioprotection in ischemia-reperfusion injury. In addition, calcineurin inhibitors are immunosuppressants. This pleiotropy has precluded the use of calcineurin inhibitors as treatments for heart failure.
