Burkholderia pseudomallei , the causative agent of the high-mortality disease melioidosis, is a Gram-negative bacterium that is naturally resistant to many antibiotics. There is no vaccine for melioidosis, and effective eradication is reliant on biphasic and prolonged antibiotic administration.
