PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) direct PIWI proteins to silence complementary targets such as transposons. In animals with a maternally specified germline, e.g. Drosophila melanogaster , maternally deposited piRNAs initiate piRNA biogenesis in the progeny.
