<title>Abstract</title> <p><bold>Background</bold> Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infects mainly CD4<sup>+</sup> T lymphocytes and causes two types of disease: the aggressive malignancy known as Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and a number of chronic inflammatory syndromes.
