The p450 hepatic microsomal enzyme system metabolizes exogenous drugs and carcinogens. Debrisoquine hydroxylase (CYP2D6), one member of the p450 hemoproteins, has polymorphic expression leading to poor metabolism of debrisoquine and similar compounds in approximately 7% of Caucasians.
