Hypersensitivity reactions to the aromatic antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) phenytoin (PHT) and carbamazepine (CBZ) appear to have an immune etiology. Current models of drug hypersensitivity center around the concept of drug bioactivation to reactive metabolites that irreversibly modify cellular proteins.
