Mice homozygous for the motheaten (Hcph(me)) mutation lack a functional SHP-1 protein tyrosine phosphatase, show severe immunologic dysregulation and die at an early age. Severe pneumonitis in me/me mice is associated with abnormal proliferation of macrophages and granulocytes.
