1. Many studies have shown that hyperhomocysteinaemia is a risk factor for atherosclerotic vascular disease. A mutation (C-677T) in the gene coding for the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) enzyme has been shown to produce a thermolabile form of the enzyme.
