The cerebral deposition of 40-42 residue amyloid beta-protein (Abeta) is a characteristic of Alzheimer's disease. Cathepsin D is possibly involved in the intracellular clearance of Abeta (Hamazaki, H. (1996) FEBS Lett., in press).
