The alternative sigma factor RpoS (sigma S) is required for Salmonella virulence in mice. We report the immunizing capacity of Salmonella typhimurium rpoS and rpoS aroA mutants to protect susceptible BALB/c mice against subsequent oral challenge with virulent S. typhimurium.
