Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to determine the alpha 2/alpha 1-, alpha/beta-, and gamma/beta-mRNA ratios in subjects with beta-thalassemia (beta-thal), hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (HPFH), and normal adults.
