Chitin is a component of the yeast cell wall which is localized to the septum between mother and daughter cells. Previous work in Saccharomyces cerevisiae has shown that this organism possesses three chitin synthases, 1, 2, and 3. Disruption experiments have shown that loss of chitin synthase 2 has a more profound effect on cell viability than loss of either of the other two and is lethal in complete media. We...
