Mutations at the Darkener of apricot (Doa) locus of Drosophila cause roughened eyes and increase transcript accumulation from the retrotransposon copia up to fourfold. Cloning of the gene and sequencing of cDNAs reveals that it encodes a putative serine/threonine protein kinase.
