In mammals, beta-oxidation of very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) takes place in peroxisomes. This process is impaired in X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (XALD) patients as a result of decreased activity of peroxisomal very long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase (VLCS).
