Benzidine is mutagenic in a modified Ames (Salmonella typhimurium) assay, which uses hydrogen peroxide-dependent peroxidative activation. The mutational specificity of benzidine was investigated in tester strain TA98, which reverts by frameshifts of the hisD3052 allele.
