Nitric oxide, a multifunctional effector molecule synthesized by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) from L-arginine, conveys signals for vasorelaxation, neurotransmission, and cytotoxicity. Three different NOS isoforms have been identified which fall into two distinct types, constitutive and inducible.
