Cytochrome P450 isotype 2D6 (CYP2D6) enzyme metabolizes the 8-aminoquinoline primaquine into its active form, 5-hydroxyprimaquine. Highly polymorphic CYP2D6 produces different enzyme activity levels among individuals.
