Mitochondria are vital organelles responsible for driving cellular energy metabolism and regulating key biological processes. Their circular mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) encodes 13 subunits of the respiratory chain proteins but is susceptible to mutations due to high levels of reactive oxygen species and limited repair mechanisms.
