Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) is essential for long-term potentiation (LTP) of excitatory synapses, a process fundamental to learning. CaMKII responds to Ca2+ influx into postsynaptic spines by phosphorylating proteins and forming new protein interactions.
