AIMS: Human atherosclerotic plaque cells display DNA damage that if left unrepaired can promote premature cell senescence. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) predisposed to senescence promote atherogenesis and features of unstable plaques and increase neointima formation after injury.
