Mutations in parkin and PINK1 cause early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD). The ubiquitin ligase parkin is recruited to damaged mitochondria and activated by PINK1, a kinase that phosphorylates ubiquitin and the ubiquitin-like domain of parkin.
