Acantholytic skin disorders, by definition, compromise intercellular adhesion between epidermal keratinocytes. The root cause of blistering in these diseases traces back to direct disruption of adhesive cell-cell junctions, exemplified by autoantibody-mediated attack on desmosomes in pemphigus.
