BACKGROUND: Metastatic carcinoma of unknown primary origin to the head and neck lymph nodes (HNCUP) engenders unique diagnostic considerations. In many cases, the detection of a high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) unearths an occult oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
