Neuritic plaques are one of the major pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. They are formed by the aggregation of extracellular amyloid-β protein (Aβ), which is derived from the sequential cleavage of amyloid-β precursor protein (APP) by β- and γ-secretase.
