Cancer germline antigens (CGAs) are expressed in immune-privileged germline tissues, while epigenetically silenced in somatic tissues. CGAs become re-expressed in tumors and can promote oncogenesis. Tumors prominently exploit mechanisms similar to those in germline tissues to shield from immunosurveillance.
