BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a global epidemic that often progresses to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. In contrast to most world populations where NAFLD is mostly prevalent among obese, NAFLD among Indians and generally among South and South-East Asians is unique and highly prevalent among individuals who are lean.
