BACKGROUND: After angioplasty, veins are more prone to intimal hyperplasia than arteries. Veins tend to produce less nitric oxide (NO), which could lead to endothelial dysfunction. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an endogenous inhibitor of NO synthase and contributes to cardiovascular disease.
