Canine degenerative myelopathy (DM) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Dogs with typical clinical signs carry homozygous mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene; therefore, DM is regarded as a naturally-occurring model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
