Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressive (FOP) is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive heterotopic ossification (HO) in skeletal muscle, tendons and ligaments. FOP is caused by gain-of-function mutations of ALK2, a receptor of bone morphogenetic proteins.
