BACKGROUND: Preceding intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration, the cell phenotype in the nucleus pulposus (NP) shifts from notochordal cells (NCs) to chondrocyte-like cells (CLCs). Microarray analysis showed a correlation between caveolin-1 expression and the phenotypic transition of NCs to CLCs.
