Several polymorphisms in melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene are shown to have associations with melanoma risk. In particular, rs1805007, rs1805008, and rs1805009 mutations causing the corresponding R151C, R160W, and D294H changes and associated with the phenotype ("red-hair mutations") are connected with melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer risks.
