Alternative splicing modulates expression of most human genes. The kinetic model of cotranscriptional splicing suggests that slow elongation expands and that fast elongation compresses the "window of opportunity" for recognition of upstream splice sites, thereby increasing or decreasing inclusion of alternative exons.
