GNE (UDP-N-acetylglucosamine 2-epimerase/N-acetylmannosamine kinase) is a bifunctional enzyme which catalyzes the conversion of UDP-GlcNAc to ManNAc and ManNAc to ManNAc 6-phosphate, key steps in the sialic acid biosynthesis.
