BACKGROUND: Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene rearrangements are detected in approximately 5% of cases of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Patients who are positive for ALK rearrangements may be successfully treated with the ALK inhibitor crizotinib.
