The mutants of Streptomyces tanashiensis strain Kala, which were specifically blocked in the synthesis of the benzoisochromanequinone antibiotic kalafungin, were isolated and classified into seven phenotypic classes on the basis of the antibiotic activity and cosynthetic properties.
