BACKGROUND: Aberrant hypermethylation of specific genes is present in esophageal squamous cell carcinomas (ESCCs). Such hypermethylation is also present in normal-appearing esophageal mucosae of ESCC patients and is considered to contribute to the formation of a field for cancerization.
