The haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) is characterised by haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia and acute renal failure. The majority of cases are seen in childhood and are preceded by an infection with Shiga-like toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC-HUS; so-called typical HUS).
