For decades, hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) were thought to be a homogeneous population of cells with flexible behavior. Now a new picture has emerged: The HSC compartment consists of several subpopulations of HSCs each with distinct, preprogrammed differentiation and proliferation behaviors.
