Thiopurine s-methyltransferase enzyme is responsible for the metabolism of immunosuppressant thiopurines, which are used in inflammatory bowel diseases, acute lymphoblastic leukemia and autoimmune diseases. Because of the relative narrow therapeutic index of thiopurines serious or life threatening side effects can occur.
