We describe an improved method for the classification of alpha 1-antitrypsin variants by isoelectric focusing in agarose. Identification of the three Pi M subtypes can now be made by using a narrow-range carrier ampholyte (pH 4.2-4.9) and pretreating serum with dithioerythritol-iodoacetic acid to enhance band resolution.
