An integrative diagnostic algorithm for alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency testing in the clinical laboratory was developed and evaluated. A novel rapid LightCycler (Roche, Indianapolis, IN) molecular assay was used to detect the common S and Z deficiency allelic variants.
