Complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase) is crucial to respiration in many aerobic organisms. The hydrophilic domain of complex I, containing nine or more redox cofactors, and comprising seven conserved core subunits, protrudes into the mitochondrial matrix or bacterial cytoplasm.
