Mouse cytomegalovirus (MCMV) infection of mice induced myocarditis, characterized by a mononuclear cell infiltrate with associated necrosis of myofibres. Myocarditis was observed in parallel with viral inclusion-bearing cells in the heart during the acute phase of the infection.
