The striking mutational specificity of N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) exhibited in the lacI gene in Escherichia coli allows comment on the phenotypic consequences of mutation at specific sequences that are not recovered after MNNG mutagenesis.
