The ABCB1 gene, coding for the efflux transporter P-glycoprotein (PGP), is a candidate gene for Alzheimer disease (AD). P-glycoprotein is heavily expressed at the blood-brain barrier, where it mediates the efflux of β-amyloid (Aβ) from the brain.
