An Escherichia coli mutant pleiotropically altered in membrane-bound oxidoreductase activities was isolated following nitrosoguanidine treatment. Mutant R23 was able to grow on glucose, but was unable to grow on succinate or other oxidizable substrates as a sole energy source.
