BACKGROUND: Collagenous colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease of unknown origin characterized by a thickened subepithelial collagen layer. Differential expression of matrix-metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of collagenous colitis.
