Hemojuvelin (HJV) is an important regulator of iron metabolism. Membrane-anchored HJV up-regulates expression of the iron regulatory hormone, hepcidin, through the bone morphogenic protein (BMP) signaling pathway by acting as a BMP co-receptor.
