In up to one-third of patients with acute myeloid leukemia, a C-terminal frame-shift mutation results in abnormal and abundant cytoplasmic accumulation of the usually nucleoli-bound protein nucleophosmin (NPM), and this is thought to function in cancer pathogenesis.
